A lesson in making healthy choices -- with a side of fun

The salad -- complete with lots of leafy greens -- that Richard Harris
ate for lunch wasn't so bad. But Harris, 12, from Dagsboro, said it could have used a little
dressing. Mariah Zamores, 11, of Georgetown, liked it "sort of ... I don't like
tomatoes." But even lukewarm enthusiasm about lettuce and tomatoes was a positive
sign last week at a weeklong camp for pre-teens and young teens that
focused on healthy eating, exercise and self-esteem.

Medicare Provides Assistance to Help Low-Income Beneficiaries Get Big Savings on Prescription Drug Costs

More Medicare beneficiaries will qualify for “Extra Help” with their prescription drug costs, and be eligible to pay no more than $2.50 for generic drugs and $6.30 for each brand name drug thanks to changes to Medicare’s Low-Income Subsidy Program (also known as LIS or “Extra Help”) that take effect this year. These changes make it easier than ever for people on Medicare with limited incomes to save on their drug costs.

NIH-Funded School-Based Study Found to Lower Obesity in High-Risk Youth

The results of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)–funded HEALTHY Study—a middle school–based intervention for diabetes risk reduction—were released earlier this week and showed that the intervention lowered the obesity rate in students who were at highest risk for type 2 diabetes.

YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program

The YMCA now offers a 16-week program developed to reduce the risk of
diabetes in individuals with pre-diabetes. Each one-hour session per
week is facilitated by a trained Lifestyle Interventionist. The sessions
will cover nutrition, physical activity and behavior
modification to help participants achieve two primary goals: Reduce body
weight by 7% and Participate in regular physical activity.
